Annamalai quits BJP! Former Tamil Nadu chief set to launch own party after fallout?
Chennai/IBNS: The Tamil Nadu unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) suffered a major setback on Friday as its most prominent leader, K Annamalai, resigned from the saffron party, ending days of intense speculation over his political future, media reports said.
In an official statement, the BJP confirmed Annamalai's exit after multiple rounds of discussions aimed at persuading him to remain in the party.
The former Tamil Nadu BJP president stepped down following meetings with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and senior BJP leader B.L. Santhosh.
BJP national president Nitin Nabin accepted Annamalai's resignation on Friday.
Buzz over new political party
Several reports have claimed that Annamalai, who was removed as the state BJP president amid the party's renewed alliance with the AIADMK, is preparing to launch his own political outfit in Tamil Nadu.
The speculation has gained momentum following the dramatic rise of actor-turned-politician Vijay, whose party swept to power in its electoral debut, reshaping the state's political landscape.
Posters fuel speculation
Rumours about Annamalai's next move intensified after posters featuring his image and the slogan "Fearless minds know no limits" appeared across several parts of Coimbatore earlier this week.
Political observers viewed the posters as a possible indication of a new political venture or mass outreach campaign.
Focus on youth leadership
The former IPS officer is reportedly working on a people's movement aimed at identifying, training and nurturing young leaders across Tamil Nadu.
Sources suggest the initiative could serve as the foundation for a broader political platform in the future.
Differences with BJP leadership
According to reports, Annamalai was unhappy after being replaced as the Tamil Nadu BJP chief and had opposed the party's decision to revive its alliance with the AIADMK.
He is understood to have favoured an independent growth strategy for the BJP in Tamil Nadu rather than relying on regional alliances.
Annamalai also reportedly believed that sections within both the BJP and the AIADMK were resistant to his statewide padayatra, which significantly boosted his public profile and political visibility across the state.
National role failed to materialise
According to sources quoted by NDTV, several factors contributed to Annamalai's decision, including the absence of a significant organisational role within the party, his decision not to contest the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, and the failure of expectations regarding a national-level position.
The reports further claimed that Annamalai had declined a Rajya Sabha seat offered by the BJP.
