Ahmedabad Police releases Hardik Patel after detaining him for short while
Ahmedabad, Aug 25 (IBNS): Less than an hour after being detained by the police, Hardik Patel, who is demanding OBC reservation for Patel Community, was released in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, media reports said.
Led by 22-year-old Hardik Patel, the Patel community held a huge rally in Gujarat's Ahmedabad city on Tuesday.
The police resorted to lathi-charge as a large crowd was still present at 9 pm at the protest rally venue.
As the news of Hardik spread, cases of arson were reported, allegedly by enraged supporters, said reports.
The mega rally by Hardik was held in the city in support of the community's demand for the status of Other Backward Class.
The Patel community, represented by the Patidar Aarakshan Andolan Samiti, has been demanding reservation in the OBC category.
Their contention is that Patel youth are neither getting admissions in colleges nor jobs in the government and want 27 per cent quota in government jobs and education.
Addressing the rally , Hardik Patel said: "We are fighting for our right."
He said he Patel's know how to 'snatch' their rights if the government did not give them reservation.
The Patels constitute 12 per cent of Gujarat's population. Those from the Schedules Tribes have 15 per cent reservation, Scheduled Castes have 7.5 per cent and OBCs have 27 per cent.
