After West Bengal, now Kerala orders stay on NPR
Thiruvananthapuram/IBNS: After West Bengal, the Left-ruled Kerala government has ordered a stay on all the activities regarding the updation of National Population Register (NPR), media reports said.
The order by government has been passed "considering the apprehension among the general public about the conduct of National Population Register-related activities lead(ing) to the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the wake of the Citizenship Amendment Act".
A statement from the Kerala Chief Minister's Office has been quoted by The Indian Express as, "The government is duty-bound to continue its cooperation for the conduct of the Census as that exercise in an inevitable one.
The decision to stay the NPR-related activities in the state was taken against the backdrop of the factors that the issue is before the Supreme Court and the amended citizenship Act has deviated from the Constitutional values."
Earlier, the Trinamool Congress government in West Bengal stopped all works related to NPR over the fear that it is the first step of the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
CPI-M leader Md. Salim in an interaction with IBNS had earlier said Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, NRC and NPR should be considered together.
