After Kashmir, flood hits Assam
Nearly 40 hours of incessant rain has resulted in flooding in low-lying areas of Guwahati in Assam, leaving several stranded.
According to reports, the rain-fed Bharalu river flowing through the city submerged Anil Nagar, Tarun Nagar, National Highway 37, arterial GS and GNB roads.
Many vehicles remained stranded on waterlogged streets.
Media reported massive power cuts across the city as a result of torrential rain. 7 deaths have been reported so far.
Tarun Gogoi’s government has ordered all schools in the city to remain shut till further notice.
Chief Minister took stock of the flash flood situation in Guwahati, and has directed the district administration to take all measures to reach out to the people in distress.
It has been learnt that the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been kept on standby in the city.
Some other districts in the state, including Goalpara and Dhubri have also been flooded due to heavy rain which triggered by cloudburst.
Flash floods and landslides have also been reported from other hilly areas.
Not only Assam, but adjacent states like Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are also affected.
Heavy flooding has washed away several bridges.
Authorities are asking residents to move to higher ground.
Met department forecasted more heavy rain in the next 48 hours.
