After EC declares Maharashtra Legislative Council polls, major political crisis averted amid Coronavirus outbreak

Mumbai/IBNS: Maharashtra, the worst COVID-19 stricken state, has its Chief Minister's fate hanging in uncertainty with less than a month to become a member of the Maharashtra Assembly to retain his post, but the probable political crisis is likely to be averted with Election Commission declaring the polls in the last week of May on Friday, said reports.

The election to the nine Maharashtra Legislative Council seats, which fell vacant on April 24, is now likely to be held on May 21 as the elections were postponed due to Covid-19 outbreak, they informed.

Chief Minister Udhav Thackeray, who is not a member of the legislative assembly, must get elected into the state legislature by May 27, ie within six months after he assumed the office of Chief Minister on Nov 28.

After the Congress government in Madhya Pradesh government was toppled by BJP, Maharashtra's Maha Vikas Aghadi Party had become cautious of a similar episode in the state. On Apr 10, the Maharashtra Cabinet had sent a recommendation to Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari seeking to "nominate" Chief Minister Uddhav Thackery to the Legislative Council.

After the poll body declared the elections following Maharashtra Governor BS Koshyari's request, Thackeray seems to have overcome the political crisis.

The Governor in his letter to the Election Commission conveyed the pressing need to hold the polls before May 27. “Since Chief Minister of Maharashtra Uddhav Thackeray is not a member of either house of the state Legislature, he needs to get elected to the Council before May 27,” read his letter, according to a Times Now report.

On Friday, Thackeray also visited the Governor to greet him on Maharashtra Day where he spent 20 minutes, said reports.
