Actor Prakash Raj defends Rahul Gandhi over sexist comment row, says he is not against women
New Delhi, Jan 11 (IBNS) : Amid the controversy over Rahul Gandhi's alleged sexist comment that stirred the National Commission for Women into action, actor Prakash Raj has stood in defence of the Congress president, saying the latter is not against women and that his statement has been misconstrued, media reports said.
The actor, who is well known for being forthright with his political views, often directed against the BJP, said : “He (Rahul Gandhi) is not against women, he has also appointed a transgender representative in important position. Why do you want to look at his statement in only one way? Isn’t it true that PM Modi has not answered (Rafale questions) and has not been in Parliament."
Rahul Gandhi had created a flutter by saying that Prime Minister Narendra Modi ran away from the Rafale debate in Parliament last week and instead fielded a woman, India’s first woman defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman, to defend him.
“The watchman with a 56-inch chest ran away and told a woman, Sitharaman ji, defend me,” Gandhi had said at a rally in Jaipur.
Following his comment, which prompted the BJP to raise an uproar for Gandhi allegedly being "sexist", the National Commission for Women slapped a notice on the Congress President on Thursday calling for an explanation.
However, Prakash Raj asked, “Why do you want to look at his statement in only one way? Is it not true that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not answered and has not been in Parliament?”
On January 5, Raj had announced that he will contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from the Bengaluru Central constituency. He had declared he would contest the polls as an independent candidate.
