Kolkata, Jan 6 (IBNS): Attacker of Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's nephew Abhishek Banerjee has been charged with attempt to murder.
The attacker, Debasis Acharya, was on Monday identified as a Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) supporter, reports said.

On Sunday, Abhishek Banerjee was slapped  at a public meeting in East Midnapore by a youth  while he was addressing people, triggering chaos and assault of the attacker by TMC supporters.

Banerjee was making a speech at a youth wing programme of TMC at Chandipore when the incident occurred on the dais.

Three separate cases have been lodged in the case.

One is for the assault on the MP, another for the ransacking of the police station and a third for the assault on Acharya.

Acharya has been charged with criminal intimidation, trespassing and causing hurt.

Earlier Abhishek Banerjee on Monday said he has forgiven the 'perpetrator' who had attacked him in a public meeting at Chandipur in East Midnapore district on Sunday.

In his Facebook post, the politician said: "It has been about 24 hours since yesterday’s incident. What happened in Chandipur is now the subject of a police enquiry. So let me restrain myself from making any comments that would pre-judge the enquiry."

He said:  "My beliefs and my will to work will not lessen because of what happened. Whoever is behind this act of cowardice has no idea what we are made of. I am now doubly committed to working for the people and doing my very best for them. "

"At a personal level, however, let me forgive the perpetrator and wish him early recovery. Today is a new day, let us look ahead. I also urge my co-workers to maintain peace, harmony through out the state and be restrained in their actions," Banerjee said.
