New Delhi, May 6 (IBNS) Singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya, who had triggered a controversy by making inflammatory tweets over his support for Bollywood actor Salman Khan, on Wednesday apologised for his remarks over 'sleeping on footpath'.

"Again I'm sorry for the words I used," he said in a statement.

He mentioned about the way he helped an injured 'sweeper', who was lying on a highway, while he was going to Pune and he later recovered after being treated in a hospital.  He said no other car stopped to help the man.

Triggering a controversy, he earlier tweeted: "Come out fraternity, support @BeingSalmanKhan boldly not hypocriticly Roads footpath r not meant 4 sleeping, not driver's or alcohol's fault."

"Suicide is crime so is sleeping on footpath..80% homeles film ppl strugld achievd stardom but never slept on footpath @BeingSalmanKhan," the singer said.

He made the remarks as he stood by Salman Khan who received a blow when a Mumbai sessions court on Wednesday convicted and sentenced him to five years in jail in connection with the 2002 hit-and-run case in which a pavement dweller was crushed under the wheels of the SUV the actor was driving.

All charges against him were proved in the court.

He received a temporary relief later in the day as the Bombay High Court  granted him two days interim bail.
