Rohtak, Feb 9 (IBNS): Eight men were on Monday arrested by the Haryana Police in connection with the gruesome rape and murder case of a 28-year-old mentally challenged woman that sent shock waves throughout the country with various social activist groups strongly condemning the incident and demanding justice, reports said.

Director general of police Yashpal Singhal told media that eight of the nine men, allegedly involved in the gang-rape, have been arrested.

One of the accused was identified as Santosh, a man of Nepali origin who worked at a shop owned by another of the accused, officials said.

While, the police faced severe criticisms over the handling of the case, Singhal has assured that action would be taken against personnel found responsible for any lapses in the investigation.

Singhal also told media that the arrested men took turns while raping the woman.

The  28-year-old mentally challenged woman was allegedly gang-raped and then murdered. The woman's body was then dumped along the Rohtak-Hisar highway in Haryana.

The woman, who originally hailed from Nepal, used to live with her sister in Bahu Akbarpur in Rohtak.

She had been reported missing on Feb 1 and her naked body was recovered on Feb 4 .

The victim's body was difficult to recognise since wild animals had attacked her face. The woman's body was found without key organs, reports said.

Following the incident, civil society members and notable faces from Rohtak joined hands with the family to take part in a candle light vigil to demand justice.
