27 injured in anti-Modi protests in Bangladesh
At least 27 people, including two journalists, were injured in Bangladesh's capital Dhaka when two groups clashed during an anti-Modi protest in the capital’s Dhaka University, according to a report in the Daily Times.
The incident happened on Tuesday when some members of the Chhatra League--the student wing of the ruling party-- in Dhaka University clashed with a group of people who were protesting against the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The injured, mostly students and leaders sympathetic to left-leaning parties of West Bengal, were then rushed to Dhaka Medical College for their treatment.
“(The) Chhatra League attacked our peaceful procession. At least 20-25 of our brothers have been injured and 15 of them are admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital,” Salman Siddique, the leader of the protesting group, was quoted as saying by the Daily Star.
Modi is scheduled to visit Bangladesh on 26-27 March to take part in the golden jubilee celebration of Bangladesh's independence. Since last week some fundamentalists and groups opposed to Bangladesh’s ruling party have been protesting against his visit.
Earlier, the Dhaka Police Chief had warned these protesters of arrests if they created any law and order situation in the capital. On 20 March, Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momin also said the government would provide maximum security during his visit.
“This is a democratic country and people have different opinions here. But we have no reason to worry about the security of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. We will provide the maximum amount of security for him,” he was quoted as saying by The Quint.
