Kolkata/IBNS: With Durga Puja round the corner and the threat of a third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic looming large, organisations are coming forward to ensure the safety of citizens.

NIP, an educational and cultural centre working for the visually impaired and other differently abled people, has decided to spread awareness about this vulnerable section of the society.

In collaboration with Forum for Durgotsab, Rotary District 3291 and Narayan Memorial Hospital, they will be awarding Puja committees who are making an endeavour to make their ‘pandal’ (marquees) enabled for senior citizens and the differently abled, along with maintaining COVID-19 safety protocols.

Nearly 350 Durga Puja Committees are competing for the honours.

The inaugural event was attended by Suparna Sengupta, CEO, Narayan Memorial Hospital and notable citizens such as Dibyendu Barua (Chess Grandmaster), singer Pramita Mallick, actor Debshankar Haldar, painter Samir Aich, music director Mallar Ghosh, Partho Ghosh and Saswat Bose from Forum for Durgotsab as well as Prabir Chatterjee, District Governor(Rotary 3291), and many others.

NIP has been publishing Puja Parikrama guides in braille for the visually challenged and arranging for pandal hopping programmes for persons with disabilities.

Debajyoti Roy, Secretary of NIP said, "The challenge for every crowd-puller puja committee will be how to strike a balance so that the pandals are built maintaining aesthetics while following social distancing along with all COVID safety protocols.”

Suparna Sengupta, CEO, Narayan Memorial Hospital (Behala) said, “It’s a proud moment for us to be selected by NIP to set pandal protocols for enlisted Puja committees.”
She said, “The third wave is knocking at our doors and as a result we need to be extra cautious while moving out and especially while pandal hopping.”
