Guwahati, May 21 (IBNS): Following the grace marks row in Class 10 examination conducted by the Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA), Assam government has decided to end the hidden grace mark process which was continued in past one and half decade.

The decision taken by the state government after accepting the recommendations by the committee with the Vice Chancellors of four universities by the state government to review the hidden grace mark process under SEBA.

While addressing a press conference, Assam education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said that, the state government has accepted the recommendations of the committee constituted by the VCs of Gauhati University, Dibrugarh University, Krishna Kanta Handique State Open University (KKHSOU) and Kumar Bhaskar Varma Sanskrit And Ancient Studies University.

The committee recommended that, moderation of marks be done as a matter of policy of the SEBA, moderation process be carried out through established procedure based on rigorous statistical analyses.

The committee also recommended that, award of grace marks be restricted only for those students who fail to score the minimum qualifying marks by marginal points of score (1-5 marks) and it is to be decided by the SEBA and facility of grace marks should be limited to a maximum of three subjects for a student.

“Maximum five grace marks to award to a student in maximum three subjects. Earlier up to 18 grace marks was awarded to a student in three-four subjects. We want to end the hidden grace marking process,” Sarma said.

The Assam minister said that, in order to compensate the difficulties experienced by candidates in understanding/solving questions SEBA will adopt the policy based on the sample data analyzed in this year.
