Presidency agitation called off

| | Apr 24, 2015, at 09:25 pm
Kolkata, Apr 24 (IBNS) Students of Kolkata's Presidency University on Friday called off their agitation ending about 24 hours of gherao of Vice Chancellor Anuradha Lohia and other top officials in protest against the new rules for admission.

The students, most of whom were undergraduates, kept  the VC along with other officials hostage since 5 pm on Thursday.

About 10 days ago, the university said that in a break from tradition, new students may be admitted solely on the basis of their marks in their school board exams and that entrance exams, conducted by different departments of the university, will no longer be essential for judging applicants.

The protestors said abolition of the system of taking admission test will lower the standard of the prestigious institution.
