Lakshyam operates dedicated helpline for victims of domestic violence

According to data released by the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) the nationwide lockdown has led to a rapid increase in cases ofdomestic violence.

The report said that during the first four phases of the lockdown, Indian women filed more domestic violence complaints than recorded in the last 10 years.

But even this unusual spurt is only the tip of the iceberg, according to NALSA, as 86 per cent women who experience domestic violence do not seek help or register complain in India and 77 per cent of the victims did not even mention the incidents to anyone.

Lakshyam, on receiving any complaint on the helpline number, immediately informs the local Police and National Commission for Women for help and rescue of the woman and further give references of NGOs who provide counselling on professional level.

According to the NGO, as most of the women they help are illiterate and come from deprived sections of the society, it provides shelter and food to them and their children.

In last four months, calls on violence hav been received from Delhi National Capital Region, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Uttarakhand, according to Lakshyam.

Moreover, Lakshyam said it also tries to find out ways for these women to be gainfully employed or earn a living.

The women under their wing have stitched 25,000 cotton reusable masks till date for orders procured by the Lakshyam team as well as stitched cloth bags out of leftover fabrics.

Said Raashi Anand, Founder& CEO of Lakshyam, “In the last few weeks, we are receiving on an average 50 to 100 calls per day on domestic violence from different parts of the country. We are extremely happy that at these difficult times, apart from rescuing them, we could also provide them food, shelter and employment. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to each and every one who supported us to help these women.”
