Kolkata's St Xavier's College emerged victorious in the Jefferson Debates 2024 hosted by the US Consulate in partnership with iLEAD recently.

36 students from 12 leading colleges across Kolkata such as St. Xavier's College, Presidency College, Jadavpur University, Scottish Church College, Loreto College, Lady Brabourne College, Shri Shikshayatan College, Sanskrit College and University, iLEAD, Calcutta University, Sister Nibedita University and Adamas University participated in the event.

While iLEAD emerged as the first runner-up, the second runner-up title was won by Jadavpur University.

Speaking at the event, U.S. Consul General Kathy Giles-Diaz said: "Debates like this are so much more than just an intellectual exercise—they are fundamental to the very fabric of democracy. In any thriving democracy, the free exchange of ideas is crucial."

She said: "Debates teach us how to think critically, listen to opposing views, and articulate our beliefs with respect and conviction. Your participation today exemplifies the power of thoughtful discourse in shaping the world around us."

The official said: "You represent the next generation of leaders who will continue to shape the ties between our two nations. The strength of the U.S.-India partnership—whether in education, trade, technology, security, business, or any other field—is built upon the ideas and actions of people like you."

She said: "As you engage in debates like today’s, you are not just participating in a contest of ideas, you are contributing to the ongoing dialogue that will shape the future of the two nations.”
