Kolkata/IBNS: A former journalist and public relations professional, for Kolkata-based writer Supriya Newar the seamless vignettes of life in the megapolis never ceases to inspire her creative works.

No wonder the city is her muse for her latest book Kolkata Classics launched recently at the Starmark bookstore in south Kolkata in association with Readomania. The launch was peppered by a conversation between the author and Programme Consultant for Victoria Memorial Hall, Raju Raman.

Newar's latest book consists of 24 poems and classic illustrations of the city's iconic spots and things such as the Howrah Bridge, Vidyasagar Setu, Princep Ghat, and hand-pulled rickshaw.

The entire book explores the variety of 24 elements which are meant to trigger the seamless relation of poetry with Kolkata among the readers.

Sharing her understanding of life in the metropolis of Kolkata, Supriya Newar told IBNS," No matter how enduring city life can be, one can always find children playing and flying kites in the Maidan area which lies in the heart of Kolkata."

Many in the city have also mastered the work-life balance and don't sacrifice their social and cultural engagements which is hard to find in any other city, she said.

Talking about the evolution of Kolkata from what it was in the 60's to present times, she said, "Calcutta [Kolkata] like any other city has changed over the years. It always had and still has fascinating layers, quirky characteristics and peculiarities that give it a unique flavour."

Highlighting the importance of Kolkata in relation to creative minds, Newar said, "Kolkata is a terrific muse for creative people because there are layers to unearth and in that process you will land up understanding yourself better."
