Awantipora (J&K): The Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) organised a four-day field visit to the famous Atal tunnel situated in Himachal Pradesh, for its top-performing civil engineering students from May 24.

The educational visit has been funded by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) under its YUVAK scheme.

A team of 10 students along with a faculty leader (Ajaz Ahmad), accompanied by the Border Roads Organization (BRO) visited the world’s longest highway tunnel (9.02 km) constructed at a height of above 3000 meters from the mean sea level which connects Manali in Himachal Pradesh to Leh in Ladakh.

The trip was undertaken to enlighten the students about the new advancement in technology used to create this tunnel.

The students were also made aware of the new machinery that helped in its creation along with acquainting them with the world-class features that this longest highway single-tube tunnel has to offer.

The visiting students called it a learning experience, vital for their growth in their field.

Earlier, while flagging off the students, the Vice-Chancellor of IUST Prof Shakil A Romshoo applauded the Department of Civil Engineering for organising such initiatives.

He said the University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked universities and engineering colleges to encourage student visits to this "technological marvel" and praised AICTE for sponsoring these learning expeditions as visits to mega-construction projects will benefit students in the long-run.
