New York, Oct 1 (IBNS) Google on Thursday celebrated socialist and theosophist, Annie Besant's 168th birth anniversary by dedicating a special doodle in her memory.

Besant, born in the year 1847 in Clapham, London, United Kingdom, was a prominent figure in India's freedom struggle.

She welcomed the idea of a free India and did much of her social work in the country.

Besant died in the year 1933 in Adyar, Madras Presidency (present day Chennai).  Besant Hill School was built in her honour.

In the doodle, she is seen sitting on a chair and holding a copy of ‘New India’ newspaper in her hands.

Google creates doodle to mark different occasions, special days, events and birthdays of renowned personalities.
