British Council to host 'The Great Talk' in Kolkata
Kolkata, Oct 27 (IBNS): The British Council has announced that it will present 'The Great Talk' series in Kolkata which is aimed at motivating young Indian students to plan their careers effectively by interacting with renowned UK speakers.
The Great Talk platform offers students a once in a lifetime opportunity to expand their horizons, meet with prominent educationists and explore new career directions.
The lecture will be delivered in the city by eminent author and writer Jon Turney on ‘Futurama – Does past cloud our thinking about futures to come?’ In this fascinating talk, Jon Turney will discuss how past experiences influence our thinking about the decades to come? That makes sense, as there are no facts about the future, even though it fascinates us. That past, though, contains plenty of old visions of the future, and more and more as the twentieth century gave way to the twenty-first.
"Jon Turney has an enduring fascination with social research related to science and technology. He has been a science writer, reviewer and editor since the early 1980s. He has also lectured widely and created and taught science communication courses in several universities. His work includes a book on fifty years of heart disease research and therapy; I Superorganism (on human microbiome) and several essays on Science, Technology and Science Fiction," a British Council statement said.
"Jon enjoys helping other people get their ideas into shape – whether through book editing, report writing, conference summaries, or consultancy. Jon enjoys writing and editing on assignment, especially around life sciences, futures, science and society and policy issues and has written for a wide range of audiences, producing everything from books to museum exhibition guides to school resources," the statement added.
He has edited a range of books, including Icon Books Revolutions in Science Series. And while at Penguin, and since then as a consulting editor, he edited the works of Brian Greene, Jared Diamond, Michio Kaku, John Gribbin, Jim Baggott, Peter Smith, and David Rothenberg.
The lecture will take place on Friday, Nov 6 at Birla Industrial & Technological Museum Auditorium from 10.00 a.m. - 11.30 a.m. Entry is free.
