World Sight Day aims to raise global awareness about eye health care

New Delhi, Oct 13 (IBNS): The Union government set up free eye check-up and treatment facilities in designated health centres all over the country as part of the World Sight Day celebrations on Thursday, according to media reports.

The International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) promotes World Sight Day (WSD) as an annual day to raise awareness about eye health as well as to engage with a wider audience – a patient’s family, those who seldom get an eye exam, diabetics – and showcase why eye health needs everybody’s attention.

World Sight Day is held on the second Thursday of October to focus global attention on blindness and vision impairment.

VISION 2020: The Right to Sight is a global initiative for the elimination of avoidable blindness, a joint programme of the World Health Organization (WHO) and IAPB.

India launched a National Programme for Control of Blindness in 1976 with the goal to reduce the prevalence of blindness from 1.4 per cent to 0.3 per cent.
