West Bengal sees decline in COVID-19 cases with significant drop in testing
Kolkata/IBNS: A meaty decline in COVID-19 cases, supported by a significant drop in testing, was on Monday reported in West Bengal, a state which is one of the current hotspots of the infection in India.
In 24 hours between Sunday and Monday evenings, the eastern state, which is witnessing a steep rise in cases following the festive season, added 19,286 infections, about 5,000 less than what was reported a day ago.
The drop in cases can be largely attributed to the lowering of tests by around 20,000 samples in the last one day.
The deaths apparently due to the virus in the state on Monday shot up by 16 though health experts claim the fatality rate in the third wave of coronavirus is comparatively lower.
In the days to come, West Bengal is staring at a massive surge in cases as Gangasagar Mela (a religious congregation) is underway at South 24 Parganas district.
Despite the warnings by the doctors and health experts, the government, backed by the Calcutta High Court, went ahead with the annual religious event that attracts lakhs of Hindu devotees.
