Uttar Pradesh: COVID-19 cases crosses 8000-mark

Lucknow/UNI: With the return of the migrant workers, the number of Covid-19 infections has seen a massive surge in Western Uttar Pradesh-particularly Noida, Ghaziabad and Meerut taking the tally to 8105 in the state on Monday.

This comes close on the heels of Purvanchal showing a similar trend.

A total of 30 fresh cases were reported in the past 24 hours at KGMU lab in Lucknow. Of these, 9 surfaced in Sambhal, 6 in Lucknow, 5 in Ayodhya, 3 each in Hardoi and Shahjahanpur and 2 each in Unnao and Moradabad.

On Sunday, the state recorded the highest ever spike of 378 new cases but in these fresh positive cases Gautam Buddha Nagar( Noida) added 49 while its adjoining Ghaziabad had 33 cases and Meerut 13.

Though Agra in the state has the list of highest number of 882 positive cases but of these 756 have recovered while 41 succumbed. There are just 85 people under treatment in the Taj city.

With around 25 lakh of migrants returning to UP during the lockdown, official figures show that the guest workers account for nearly one-fourth of the total cases in the state.

As per official figures, as of now, 2,165 migrants who have returned from other states have tested positive for Covid-19, taking the tally to 8,075 cases.
