Washington/IBNS: The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Wednesday authorized Pfizer's Covid pill for high-risk people aged 12 and over.

This is a major milestone in combatting the pandemic that will allow millions to access the treatment.

"Today's authorization introduces the first treatment for COVID-19 that is in the form of a pill that is taken orally - a major step forward in the fight against this global pandemic," FDA scientist Patrizia Cavazzoni was quoted as saying by AFP.

Meanwhile, the Omicron variant has now been confirmed to be present in at least 36 US states and more than 75 countries, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had said.

However, the Delta variant still represents approximately 96 per cent of cases across the country, while the Omicron variant is estimated to represent about 3 percent of US cases.
