The Czech Republic reports its first cases of Zika virus attack

| | Feb 25, 2016, at 09:08 pm
Prague, Feb 25, (IBNS) The Czech Republic reported its first cases of Zika virus in the country on Thursday but health officials have not said where or how the people contracted the virus, according to media reports.
Czech health officials have said they will call a press conference later on Thursday to discuss the issue.

World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Margaret Chan arrived in Brazil on Wednesday to visit the country's northeast areas, which have been most affected by neurological disorders suspected of being linked to the mosquito-borne Zika virus, including microcephaly in babies.

The top United Nations health official visited a hospital and clinical research centre in Recife, the capital of Pernambuco state where a significant number of pregnant women who contracted the Zika virus during pregnancy have delivered babies with microcephaly.

“A coordinated international response is needed to improve surveillance, the detection of infections, congenital malformations, and neurological complications, to intensify the control of mosquito populations, and to expedite the development of diagnostic tests and vaccines to protect people at risk, especially during pregnancy,” Dr. Chan said.

Earlier in February, the first case of Zika virus in Europe was noted in Spain when a pregnant woman was diagnosed with the virus.
