Kolkata, May 7 (IBNS): The department of orthopedics at the Rabindranath Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences (RTIICS) on Wednesday announced an 'arthritis clinic' on May 10 from 12 noon onwards, here.

According to the officials, the clinic will offer free Bone Mineral Density (BMD) test screening along with consultation with a seasoned specialist Dr. Abhirup Maulik, Consultant, Rheumatologist, RTIICS.

RTIICS noted that the arthritis clinic will be functional on every second week of every month and patients can call on 9874855992 for appointment/registration.

According to a study, arthritis is rising at an alarming rate with the recent statistics proving over 180 million patients in India suffering from this disease.

According to the recent trends and studies, it is seen that with changing lifestyle, the severity of arthritis at a young age, especially in women in particular are on the rise.

Any patient showing the signs of varied levels of pain, swelling, joint stiffness, and a constant ache around the joint(s) or other symptoms like inability to use the hand or walk, weight loss, poor sleep and muscle aches and pains is recommended to visit an orthopedic consultant.

Commenting on the launch, Dr. Abhirup Maulik said, "Awareness about Arthritis is important as it can help one to act on time since early detection results in better treatment."

He added, "Treatment options vary depending on the type of arthritis and include physical therapy, lifestyle changes (including exercise and weight control), orthopaedic bracing, and medications. Joint replacement surgery may be required in eroding forms of arthritis."
