RTI shows huge number of vaccines wasted by several Indian states, Tamil Nadu leads the chart
New Delhi: A Right To Information (RTI) has shown several Indian states have witnessed wastage of COVID-19 vaccines
According to media reports, Tamil Nadu is leading the cities where such a waste has been recorded.
Tamil Nadu reported the highest vaccine wastage of over 12 per cent, followed by Haryana (9.74%), Punjab (8.12%), Manipur (7.8%) and Telangana (7.55%), according to the centre's response to the RTI query, reports NDTV.
Over 44 lakh doses were wasted out of 10 crore doses used by states till April 11, the Indian news channel reported.
States that achieved the least vaccine waste are Kerala, West Bengal, Himachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Goa, Daman and Diu, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep. There was "zero wastage" of doses in these states, the RTI reply said as quoted by NDTV.
Several states have reported a shortage of vaccines in recent days.
In a move to widen the vaccination drive against Covid-19, the Centre on Monday announced that everyone above 18 years will be eligible for inoculation from May 1.The government announcement comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a series of meetings on Monday.
All adults will be vaccinated in "a liberalised and accelerated Phase 3 strategy of COVID-19 vaccination", the government said in a statement on a day India reported 2.73 lakh cases in a day.
