North and Middle Andaman declares night curfew following sharp surge of COVID-19 cases

Mayabunder/UNI: After south Andaman district of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, now the North and Middle Andaman District on Sunday declared night curfew following a sharp surge in COVID-19 positive cases in the UT.

The District Magistrate of North and Middle Andaman has also ordered night curfew in the region from 9 pm to 5 am in exercise of the powers vested under section 144 of Cr.P.C.

As per the order, movement of individuals shall remain strictly prohibited between 9 pm to 5 am.

The prohibition has come into effect from the midnight of April 10, 2021 and shall remain in force till April 30, 2021.

Exempted from the order are Officers/officials involved in essential and emergency services such as Health and Family Welfare and all related medical establishments, Police, Home Guards, Civil Defence, Fire and emergency services, District Administration, Pay & Accounts Office, Electricity, Water and Sanitation, Public Transport, Disaster Management and related services on production of valid Identity card; persons engaged for essential activities, including operation of industrial units in multiple shifts, movement of persons and goods, STS buses on Andaman Trunk Road, loading and unloading of essential cargo and travel of persons to their destinations after disembarking on production of valid travel tickets; all private medical personnel such as doctors, nursing staff, paramedical etc. and other hospitals services (such as hospitals, diagnostic centres, clinics, pharmacies, pharmaceutical companies and other medical and health services) on production of valid Identity cards; pregnant women and patients availing medical services; and any person who has to move during the restricted hours for the purpose of availing first convoy to Port Blair can do so with the special permission of the concerned Assistant Commissioner.

“Any disobedience of the orders shall invite penal action u/s 188 of Indian Penal Code, 1860 and the relevant provisions of the Disaster Management Act, 2005 against the violator(s), the order read,” the official night curfew orders said.

At present there are 75 active COVID-19 cases in Andaman and till Sunday altogether 5,175 cases have been detected in Andaman, out of which 5,038 people have already recovered.

Andaman and Nicobar islands have so far registered 52 COVID related deaths.

Meanwhile, 'Vaccination Festival-Tika Utsav' will be organized in A&N Islands from Monday to fight against the surging COVID-19 cases. The mass vaccination programme will be conducted till April 14.
