Thiruvanthapuram, May 22 (IBNS) :  Ten people have so far died of the deadly Nipah virus in Kerala as it sets the alarm bell ringing high in the state, media reports said on Tuesday.

Among those dead are two brothers of the same family and a nurse.

According to reports, two persons, affected by the virus, are in a critical state.

The virus is borne by fruit bats and the infection is believed to have started with a family in Kozhikode.

The reports quoted officials as saying that around 94 people have been quarantined inside their homes, while  nine people are under surveillance in hospitals.

Kerala Health Minister K K Shylaja said no new case has, however, been reported in the last 24 hours.

Nipah was first identified in Malaysia in 1998.
