Maternal mortality rate in Bengal down to 101, says Central Report

Kolkata, Aug 5 (UNI) The maternal mortality rate (MMR) in Bengal has reduced significantly, according to the Sample Registration Survey’s Special Bulletin on Maternal Mortality in India.

From 113, it has reduced to 101, when the national average is a high 130.

The reason for this is the large number of healthcare-related schemes and awareness programmes that the West Bengal Government has undertaken, resulting in a huge jump in institutional delivery, from 65 per cent in 2010 to 97.5 per cent in 2018-19.

Other maternal care-related projects include improving anganwadi centres across the State, building Mother and Child Hubs and Waiting Huts (for women from remote areas to deliver in), etc.

Empowerment of women through projects like Kanyashree and Rupashree has also played a big part.

According to experts, the MMR in the State will soon go below 100.
