Jakarta, Sept 29 (IBNS): A 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit Indonesia on Friday, triggering a tsunami, officials said.

Waves of up to 2m (6.6ft) high swept through Palu on Sulawesi island, not long after authorities had lifted a tsunami warning, BBC reported.

Several video footage of the tsunami incident have gone viral on the social media.

People could be seen screaming and fleeing from the spot as the tsunami hit Palu.

As per BBC report, officials have reported five deaths - but it is not clear if those were as a result of the tsunami.

An earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter Scale hit central Sulawesi in Indonesia on Friday, officials said.

It was felt shortly after a 6.0-magnitude quake hit the area and left one killed, reports said.

As per the  U.S. Geological Survey, the quake hit north of Palu city of the country.

Initially, the tsunami warning was issued by the authority. It was later lifted.

National and Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho told Jakarta Post that on Friday the quake hit the area about 27 kilometers north east of Donggala, at a depth of 10 km.

The quake was felt at 5.02 pm local time.

The main earthquake was felt in the areas of Donggala, Palu and Poso, reports said.
