New Delhi/IBNS: India witnessed a massive jump in the number of Covid-19 cases as the tally went past 67,000 on a day Prime Minister Narendra Modi is holding his fifth video conference with all Chief Ministers over Coronavirus and the nationwide lockdown.

Over 4,000 Covid cases have been reported in India in the last 24 hours though the recovery cases have also surpassed 20,000 across the vast country of 1.3 billion people.

As per the last update, 67,152 people have contracted the pandemic virus with the state of Maharashtra still leading the tally with its 22,171 cases followed by Modi's home state Gujarat (8,194).

Among 67,152, 20,917 people have either been cured or discharged while 2,206 Covid patients have died so far in the country.

Modi along with his battery of top ministers began the video conference with the CMs at 3 in the afternoon and the meeting is likely to continue till late night.

No doubt the PM will be discussing the future of the nationwide lockdown with the CMs as the world's largest shutdown is due to end on May 18.

Though 1.3 billion people are under lockdown since Mar 24 midnight, the restrictions were extended twice barring a few relaxations in Covid-free zones to stem the spread of the respiratory disease which has no vaccine or cure.

Going a step further, Telangana has already announced the extension of the lockdown till May 29.
