New Delhi/IBNS: India, the second worst Covid-19-affected country in the world, reported over 48,000 new cases in the last 24 hours, taking the overall tally of infections to 80,88,851.

48,648 Covid-19 cases and 563 deaths apparently due to the virus have been reported in 24 hours between Thursday and Friday mornings.

The Covid-19 toll touched 1,21,090 on Friday morning.

The national recovery rate has further increased to 91.15% with 73,73,375 people recovering from the virus since the first case, which was reported in Kerala in January, 2020.

The active cases have fallen below the 6-lakh mark, the Union Health Ministry's data said.

Vaccine productions by December?

Vaccine manufacturer Serum Institute of India (SII)'s chief Adar Poonawalla has said the Oxford University's Covid-19 vaccine can be made available in the country by December, 2020.

In an interview with English news channel NDTV, Poonawalla on Wednesday said, "If we don't go for an emergency license, our trials should be over by December and then we can maybe we can launch in India in January subject to the UK trial also being completed which it's on the verge on being completed."

The SII is working on multiple Covid-19 vaccines including the one developed by Oxford University, named Covishield in the Asian country.
