New Delhi/IBNS: India's fresh coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours stood at 18,732, the lowest daily rise in nearly six months.

During this period, 279 deaths were recorded, taking the overall count since the outbreak in January to 1,47,622.

The country's overall tally stood 1,01,87,850, with 2,78,690 active cases.

India reported a total recovery of 97,61,538 cases taking the recovery rate at 95.82 per cent.

Meanwhile, India's National Task Force (NTF) on COVID-19 met on Saturday to discuss evidence-based modifications in testing, treatment and surveillance strategies for SARS-CoV-2 in view of the recent reports of emergence of the new variant strain of the virus from the UK.

The National Task Force deliberated in detail on aspects related to current National Treatment Protocol, testing strategy and surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 vis-à-vis the UK variant strain.

It was emphasized that since the UK variant strain is implicated to cause increased transmissibility of the virus, it is critical to identify individuals infected with this strain and adequately contain them to prevent its transmission in India.
