Highly infectious C.1.2 Covid variant becomes new cause of worry

New Delhi/IBNS: The emergence of new C.1.2 Covid variant, found in South Africa, has caused fresh worry while the Delta variant of the virus continues to wreak havoc in many countries.

The new variant has forced authorities across the world to impose new restrictions as scientists say the strain may have a greater ability to neutralise the antibodies that protect the body, according to media reports.

A study that is yet to be peer-reviewed said that the C.1.2 variant could be more infectious and can penetrate the immune system easily

The study posted on the preprint repository MedRxiv on August 24 said that the C.1.2 has mutated substantially compared to C.1, which triggered the first wave of Covid in South Africa, according to an NDTV report.

The C.1.2 was first found in South Africa in May.

Till now, WHO hasn't termed the variant as "a variant to follow" or "a variant of concern".

It is a clustering of genetically similar viruses and researchers said that it has gone a lot of mutations in a short period of time.

The C.1.2 has not been found in India so far, news agency ANI has quoted government sources as saying.

Mumbai's civic body Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has made RT-PCR tests a must for passengers from UK, Europe, Middle East, South Africa, Brazil, Bangladesh, Botswana, China, Mauritius, New Zealand and Zimbabwe.
