Ahmedabad, Dec 18 (IBNS): A train ran over and killed three Asiatic lions in western India's Gir forest shortly after midnight on Tuesday, reports said.

The accident took place in Gujarat's Amreli district and involved a goods train heading to Papavav from Botad. The lion carcasses were discovered on Tuesday morning.

"A pride of six lions was passing by the railway track when a goods train crossed the track and killed three of them at around 12:45 am," Dushyant Vasavada, Chief Conservator of Forests of Junagadh Wildlife Circle, told NDTV and added that two male and one female animals, all between 1.5 and 3 years of age, were killed.

"We are trying to get details on the train speed, negligence of trackers and forest staff. Stringent action will be taken against the defaulters," he said.

Since September, around 30 lions have died at the Gir forest of several reasons.
