Developed countries need to donate more in climate fund: Bangladesh

| @indiablooms | Apr 02, 2021, at 08:59 pm

Bangladesh Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momin asked developed countries to scale up climate actions, and add funds to the Multi Donar Fund, and also said that the world is nowhere close to the annual target set in the Paris Agreement.

“We invite developed economies to participate in this multi-donor fund. Global financing mechanisms to address the challenges of climate change are severely under-resourced,” Momin was quoted as saying by Dhaka Tribune. He was addressing the “Climate and Development Ministerial” organized by the UK as the Presidency of the COP26.

Bangladesh is currently the chair of the Climate Vulnerable Forum.

He also flagged concern over the complicated structure of international climate finance. “We are nowhere near the Paris Agreement’s annual target of $100 billion; the complicated architecture of international climate finance is also a barrier,” he said in his address.

The strict implementation of the Paris Agreement, he said, is the only way forward for a sustainable future.

To build a sustainable, prosperous, and resilient future, we need a political commitment based on shared responsibility and collective efforts, he said.

Momin also emphasized the fact that extreme climate conditions have displaced many more people than violent conflicts. Due consideration should be given to the protection, relocation, and rehabilitation of these groups, he argued.
