New Delhi/IBNS: The national capital on Friday reported a whopping 700 plus cases of Covid-19 in a 24-hour period for the first time this year.

At least 716 cases were reported in the last 24 hours, the government data released this evening stated.

The figure is the highest for Delhi this year and also the highest since the last time it breached the 700-mark on Dec 27 with 757 cases.

On Wednesday, Delhi reported 609 cases of coronavirus.

The recovery rate as of Friday is 97.81 per cent and the mortality rate is 1.69 per cent, said the government data.

There has been a surge in Covid-19 cases in several states including Maharashtra and Punjab.

Maharashtra, Punjab, Karnataka, Gujarat and Chhattisgarh together account 80.63 % of the country's daily new cases.

Several states have announced fresh lockdowns in small pockets and districts to contain the spread of the 'second wave' of the virus.

Mumbai alone recorded 3,062 Covid cases in the last 24 hours, which is the city's highest single-day increment in its total cases ever.

India’s total active caseload stands at 2.71 lakh (2,71,282) on Friday, 2.82% of the total positive cases in the country. A net incline of 18,918 cases were recorded from the total active caseload in the last 24 hours.
