Covid-19 vaccination drive starts in Assam

Guwahati/UNI: The Covid-19 vaccination drive started in Assam on Saturday along with other parts of the country.

In the first phase, a total of 2.90 lakh people including 1.90 lakh health workers and nearly 1 lakh frontline workers will be vaccinated at 65 centers in 33 districts of the state.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has inaugurated the vaccination drive at Assam Medical College and Hospital, Dibrugarh while state Health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the drive at Guwahati Medical College and Hospital.

The state has received nearly 2.21 lakh doses of Covid-19 vaccines including nearly 2 lakh doses of Covishield and 20,000 doses of Covaxin.

Assam Health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the state health department has trained 8651 nurses for vaccination drive and 1300 supervisors will monitor the nurses.

6500 people in the state will receive Covid-19 vaccine per day at the identified centers in the first stage.

The Covid-19 vaccine will not be administered to pregnant women and children below 14 years of age.

The Covishield vaccine, made by the Serum Institute of India, will be administered at 59 centers and Covaxin vaccine, made by Bharat Biotech, at six centers in the state.
