Covid-19 outbreak: Active cases in West Bengal reach 572, death toll jumps to 33

Kolkata/IBNS: With 37 fresh cases in last 24 hours, the number of active Covid-19 positive cases in West Bengal has mounted to 572 while coronavirus fatalities in the state have reached 33 as the death audit committee confirmed 11 more deaths directly caused by the pandemic virus, official said on Thursday.

West Bengal Chief Secretary Rajiva Sinha said that the state formed Covid death audit committee had evaluated 105 deaths till date where 33 deaths were found directly caused by coronavirus.

"Remaining 72 deaths were due to comorbidities where Covid-19 was incidental finding," Rajiva Sinha said.

The Chief Secretary said that new 37 Covid positive cases were reported from Kolkata, Howrah, North 24 Parganas and Hooghly districts.

"With 15 patients were discharged in last 24 hours, total 139 persons have recovered from Covid-19 infections in the state so far," Rajiva Sinha said.

"Presently, West Bengal has 444 Covid containment zones, including 264 in Kolkata, 70 in North 24 Parganas and 72 in Howrah, while there are eight districts in the state which are still Covid-free" Sinha added.

Chief Secretary Rajiva Sinha said that Bengal had tested 16525 samples till date, with 1905 tests were conducted in last 24 hours.

Currently, 5288 persons are kept in government quarantine centres across West Bengal while 10773 people are under home surveillance in the state.
