Covid-19: One more die in Odisha, 130 fresh cases push the tally to 2608

The Health and Family Welfare department sources said a 63 year old male patient of Khordha district who had tested positive for Covid, passed away while undergoing treatment in hospital.

He was a chronic patient of diabetes and other underlying comorbidities. With his death the total covid casualty in the state rose to 8, four of whom reported from Khordha district, three from Ganjam and one from Cuttack district.

Two other people have also died but the government claimed that they died due to complications other than covid.

Sources said out of 130 positive cases reported from 21 districts in the state,124 were from the quarantine centres and the rest six are local cases.

The coastal district of Cuttack reported the highest 23 positive cases followed by 22 each in Khordha and Mayurbhanj district, 12 in Ganjam and seven each from Sundargarh and Gajapati district.

Over 50 local cases have been reported from the state during the past five days causing concern among the experts on raising the question of the possibility of community transmission in the state.

As of midnight on June 4, over 1.60 lakh samples have been tested out of which 2608 have found covid positive ,1481 of whom have already been cured and discharged from the hospital.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik,meanwhile, has appealed to the people to remain indoors and do not move out of home unless there is any emergency.

In a video message to the people last night, Patnaik said the next 25 days are crucial for the state, adding that “our success in fighting against the coronavirus depends upon how we manage the situation in the next 25 days.

The state has till date 1117 active cases and the covid 19 has already spread to all the 30 districts in the state.

However, nine districts have the maximum covid positive cases,almost accountable to over 72 per cent of the total covid positive cases in the state.

Ganjam district continued to be in the top of district table with 533 covid positive cases followed by Jajpur (293),Khordha (217)Balssore (179),Kendrapara (163),Cuttack ( 154),Bhadrak (136),Bolangir (105) and Puri with 99 cases.

The Chief Minister also appealed to the people to maintain self lockdown keeping in mind the well being of their family members to fight against the covid 19.

Patnaik said, “June is the most crucial month for all of us and I again appeal to all to stay home and follow the government guidelines of wearing mask, maintaining social distance and washing hands for 20 seconds.”

The Chief Minister remarked whether the lockdown or shut down remains in force or not, if we think of our children and parents and observe self lock down, we will certainly win the covid pandemic.

Patnaik said the safety of 4.5 crore brothers and sisters is most important for him adding that the lockdown and shut down are imposed only to restrict the movement of the people.

He said at present the covid 19 is in peak stage. A fortnight back only 3000 people were infected daily in the country which has now gone up to 10,000 every day posing a big challenge for all of us.

Patnaik said the two days shut down in a week in June will keep us confined to our house for eight days in the month and also keep away from the corona virus infection.

The ten hours curfew from 7 pm to 5 am every day will also keep us confined to our house for 300 hours during the June.

With the night curfew and shut down together we will be home for seventeen days in June and this will greatly reduce the chance of being infected with coronavirus, Patnaik said.
