Guwahati/IBNS: To combat the spread of the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), the Assam government has started works of two large quarantine centres with capacity of 1000 persons each in Guwahati.

The large quarantine centres will be set up at Sarusajai stadium and Nehru stadium in the capital city of Assam.

Work has begun in full swing to prepare these two quarantine centres.

Assam Health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said that, nearly 1000 persons will be accommodated in each quarantine centre.

“We have decided to establish one home quarantine camp at Sarusajai stadium with a capacity of around 1000. This home quarantine centre will be completed within a week. If any positive case emerge in a family then other members of the family will be taken to this centre where food, attached toilets will be available. We will keep them under close watch of doctors,” Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

The Assam minister also said the state government has taken an apartment near by the quarantine centre on rent where almost 200 doctors can be given accommodation.

“No positive case of COVID-19 has been found in the state so far, but the state government is preparing to combat with any situation,” Himanta said.

On the other hand, the state government has already converted two government run hospitals – Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital (MMCH) in Guwahati and the Sonapur Civil hospital to special Coronavirus treatment hospital.

The state government has also directed all medical colleges in the state to postpone all elective surgery cases in the wake of COVID-19 outbreak.
