Cancer treatment without surgery? Hyderabad hospital brings India’s only MR-LINAC technology

The MR-LINAC Technology is one of the most advanced radiation therapy technologies in the world, and the only one in India is at Yashoda Hospital Hitec City Branch.

Over 800 patients have been successfully cured by this method, with this technology using MRI- based radiation techniques, which is an upgrade from the older CT scan-based radiation.

This also allows Adaptive therapy, which helps doctors adapt to the focused problems without damaging critical tissues of the individual, thereby reducing the side effects of radiation.

Cancers like prostate cancer, cervical cancer, etc are getting cured in much safer ways through this technology.

The hospital also provides free pick-up and drop-off for prospective patients from the railway stations or the airport and offers subsidised guest rooms and food for outstation patients and their families to stay together.

Dr Suneetha, Senior Consultant Radiation Oncologist and Clinical Director of Yashoda Hospitals, was in attendance at the event.

Speaking on the success rate of the new technology, Dr. Suneetha said, “The success rate for this technology is much better than the existing technology right now. Success rate, however, also depends on the type of cancer you are treating. For cervical cancers and prostate cancers, the success rate is 80%-90%.”

She furthered on the hospitality provided by the hospitals to national and international patients, such as translators, hotel rooms, and food, for making the patient and their family as comfortable as possible.

Reflecting upon the use of Artificial Intelligence in the new technology and its side effects, Dr. Suneeta told IBNS, “ There are times when AI makes mistakes in the procedural arrangements of the patients. Sometimes something minute might be considered something very huge by it. That’s why even when we use AI, our supervision over it becomes very important since you cannot blindly believe in the machine’s AI capabilities and there can be a chance of error.”

The press meet in Kolkata invites patients and families who might have been suffering from cancer, where the patient might be too old for surgery.

A technology like this severely reduces the risk of fatality since surgery in older individuals often leads to organ failure or other complications, which can lead to their demise.
