Bihar storm toll touches 65; CM makes aerial survey

Patna, Apr 23 (IBNS) The toll in the devastating storm in Bihar rose to 65 as chief minister Nitish Kumar made an aerial survey of the affected areas on Thursday and held a meeting with officials for relief and rehabilitation of survivors.
Reports said Purnea district bore the brunt with a maximum of 32 casualties, while seven lost their lives in Madhepura. The remaining deaths were reported from  other 10 affected districts.
 
More than 80 people were seriously injured in the storm and undergoing treatment at various government hospitals.

The chief minister visited from air the affected areas in Bhagalpur and neighbouring storm-ravaged locations.
 
The centre has promised all assistance and the Union Home Minister is expected to visit the affected areas on Friday
 
President Pranab Mukherjee on Thursday condoled the loss of lives due to the storm. .

He also sent "heartfelt condolences" to the families of the deceased and wished speedy recovery for the injured people.

In his message to Bihar Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi, the president said: "I have learnt about the powerful storm that hit various districts of Bihar, resulting in the loss of a number of lives, damage to property and injury to many others."

"My thoughts are with all those affected by this natural calamity. I understand rescue and relief operations are currently underway."

"I am sure that the state government and other agencies are taking necessary steps to provide all possible help to the bereaved families who have lost their near and dear ones," the president added.

Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi on Thursday asked the state government to pay Rs.4 lakh compensation to the family members of the victims immediately and carry on relief and rehabilitation work speedily.
 
The affected districts are in north and northeastern parts of the state including Purnea, Araria, Kishanganj, Katihar, Madhepura, Supaul, Saharsa, Bhagalpur, Samastipur, Darbhanga and Madhubani.
