Assam flood: 66 wild animals including three rhinos die in Kaziranga

Guwahati/IBNS: The flood situation in Assam’s Kaziranga National Park and Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary has slightly improved on Wednesday, but around 90 per cent areas of both the places are still underwater.

In Kaziranga National Park, 66 wild animals including three one-horned rhinos have died in the deluge.

Two rhinos drowned in floodwaters in the national park in the last 24 hours.

The park authority said that 55 hog deer, five wild boar, one wild buffalo, one swamp deer, one porcupine have also died in flood.

153 anti-poaching camps out of 223 camps of the park are still underwater.

On the other hand, the forest personnel and the Center for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC) have rescued 117 wild animals including two rhinos from Kaziranga National Park and nearby areas during the flood situation.

A team of CWRC on Tuesday rescued a female rhino calf which was separated from her mother due to high flood in the Agartoli range in Kaziranga National Park.

The rhino calf is now under care at CWRC centre located nearby the park.

On the other hand, about 90 per cent areas of Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary and the 12 anti-poaching camps are currently underwater.
