Rajkot, Dec 19 (IBNS): A lioness strayed into a village near Gujarat's Gir Lion Sanctuary, killed a cow and devoured it in full view of people, according to media reports on Monday.

The incident took place on Sunday in Virpur village in Dhari taluka.

According to local reports, the lioness entered the village in the afternoon and killed the cow. It began to devour the animal but was disturbed when people started gathering around it.

As the lioness moved away, villagers thought she had left for good. But to their surprise, it returned at night to devour the carcass once again, media reported.

According to reports, the village is about 10km from the sanctuary, the only forest home of lions outside Africa.

The local forest department was trying to locate the lioness and cage her to be released inside the forest, local reports said on Monday.
