Tata Group Chairman N Chandrasekaran takes direct control of day-to-day ops of Air India amid crisis

Tata Group's chairman N Chandrasekaran has taken direct control of the day-to-day operations of Air India amid the crisis that emerged after the deadly Ahmedabad plane crash on June 12, media reports said.

According to a Times of India report, Chandrasekaran is managing crucial aspects such as government relations, safety assessments, aircraft maintenance, and staff welfare, all while under substantial public attention.

This is not the first time the conglomerate’s chairman has taken the reins of a company in his hands.

Tata chairmen have historically taken direct charge during times of crisis.

For instance, J.R.D. Tata personally led the response to the 1989 Tata Steel fire.

A former Tata Group director told ET that Ratan Tata was hands-on in dealing with both the Tata Finance controversy and the 26/11 terrorist attacks at the Taj Hotels.

N Chandrasekaran’s earlier tenure at TCS has also showcased his ability to navigate complex crises.

According to sources quoted by the financial daily, Air India CEO Campbell Wilson is working closely with Chandrasekaran on strategic direction and regulatory matters.

Given the current challenges, swift and detailed management is essential—an area where Chandrasekaran’s experience within the Tata Group makes him particularly capable.

A senior group official noted that Air India is currently the group’s top priority, with the chairman largely operating from the airline’s headquarters.

"It needs focused attention and swift, independent decision-making—something only the group chairman can currently provide." The official underlined the importance of unified efforts to rebuild trust and restore the airline’s reputation.

The June 12 Boeing 787 crash in Ahmedabad led to 241 deaths, including 12 crew members, along with 33 casualties on the ground. Air India has announced ₹1 crore in compensation for each of the bereaved families.
