SAIL opens first overseas office in Dubai to drive exports, tap emerging markets

Dubai: State-run steel producer SAIL has opened its first international office in Dubai as part of its strategy to explore opportunities in emerging markets, according to an official release issued on Friday.

With this move, SAIL becomes the third public sector unit under the Ministry of Steel to establish a presence in Dubai.

The new Representative Office marks the company’s entry into the Middle East and forms a critical part of its broader global expansion plans.

The office was formally inaugurated on Thursday by Union Minister of Steel and Heavy Industries H D Kumaraswamy. The event was attended by India's Consul General to Dubai, Satish Kumar Sivan, SAIL Chairman Amarendu Prakash, and other senior officials from the steel ministry.

The ministry said that the Dubai office will serve as a strategic hub to boost SAIL’s export efforts, deepen industry relationships, and strengthen India’s trade ties with the UAE.

With Dubai acting as a gateway to the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region and offering an investor-friendly ecosystem, it provides an ideal base for companies like SAIL to expand into high-potential markets.

The move is seen as a major milestone in SAIL’s journey toward becoming a globally competitive steelmaker and also reflects India's rising presence in the international steel sector.

The ministry noted that SAIL currently procures around 2.5 million tonnes of limestone annually from UAE-based Stevin Rock LLC in Ras Al Khaimah. This volume is expected to increase in line with SAIL’s planned expansion from its current capacity of 20 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 35 MTPA.

Earlier this week, Minister Kumaraswamy also inaugurated offices of two other state-owned steel entities—NMDC and MECON—in Dubai.
