Rajnath Singh welcomes Rs 7.85 lakh crore defence allocation in Union Budget 2026
New Delhi: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday welcomed the allocation of Rs 7.85 lakh crore to the defence sector in the Union Budget 2026, saying the outlay strengthens the country’s security framework following the success of Operation Sindoor.
He noted that more than Rs 2.19 lakh crore has been allocated under the capital head for the armed forces, of which Rs 1.85 lakh crore is earmarked for capital acquisition.
The allocation is about 24% higher than the capital acquisition budget for 2025-26 and is expected to further boost India’s military capabilities.
Singh said modernisation of the armed forces remains a key focus of the budget.
In a post on X, Singh described the budget as “Yuva Shakti-driven” and aimed at “transforming aspiration into achievement” and “potential into performance”.

Singh said the budget, guided by three “Kartavyas”, seeks to accelerate economic growth, meet public aspirations and ensure inclusive participation.
“Together, these priorities will drive inclusive development, promote the manufacturing sector, and create sustainable infrastructure."
"This budget is designed to ensure that the dividends of growth reach every section of society, with special focus on the poor, the underprivileged, and the disadvantaged."
Reiterating the government’s commitment to the welfare of veterans and their families, Singh said Rs 12,100 crore has been allocated to the Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme, an increase of 45.49% over the budget estimates for 2025-26.
He described the allocation as a reflection of the government’s resolve to ensure quality healthcare for ex-servicemen and their families.
