PM Modi flags off first export locomotive from Bihar’s Marhowra plant under ‘Make in India’ drive

Made for the Republic of Guinea, the locomotive is part of India’s strategic push to become a global manufacturing hub under the 'Make in India' initiative.

These high-powered locomotives are equipped with advanced AC propulsion systems, regenerative braking, microprocessor-based control technology, and ergonomically designed cabins.

The export is part of a broader agreement with Guinea titled “Project KOMO”, which covers the supply of 140 diesel locomotives valued at approximately ₹3,000 crore.

In Siwan, the Prime Minister also inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for several infrastructure projects in the water, power, and rail sectors.

Addressing a public gathering, Modi linked India’s global economic rise to the growth of states like Bihar.

“I returned from abroad only yesterday. During this visit, I spoke to the leaders of the world's prosperous countries. All the leaders are very impressed with India's rapid progress. They see India becoming the world's third-largest economic superpower. Bihar is going to play a crucial role in this,” he said.

From freedom legacy to industrial hub

Madhepura, located in Bihar’s Chapra district and once a notable centre during India’s independence movement, is now emerging as a pivotal node in the country’s industrial revival.

The Marhowra factory — a joint venture between US-based Wabtec (76%) and Indian Railways (24%) — reflects this transformation.

Since its inception in 2018, the facility has produced 729 high-horsepower diesel locomotives, including 545 units of 4500 HP and 184 units of 6000 HP.

The latest milestone — the export to Guinea — signals India's growing capability in building and delivering complex railway systems to global clients.

The export of these locomotives is a major breakthrough for both India’s industrial ambitions and Bihar’s economic future.

Modi's emphasis on “Make in Bihar – Make for the World” reinforces the state’s position in India’s export-led growth narrative.

The project also gives a significant push to the government’s twin visions of “Make in India” and “Aatmanirbhar Bharat”, turning policy into real-world outcomes that contribute to India’s status as a trusted global manufacturing partner.
