Bhubaneswar/UNI:  Odisha government has saved about 700 large trees in a year by printing budget documents through digital methods.

Odisha Governor Prof Ganeshi Lal said this while addressing the budget session of the state Assembly that commenced yesterday.

The Governor said the annual budget 2019-20 has reduced physical printing of budget documents through digital methods.

It has reduced the printing of about 57 lakh pages of paper that saves about 700 large trees a year.

Prof Lal said the government intends to completely switch over to paperless budgeting in the coming years as a green initiative.

The government, he said, has launched a five-year scheme’’ Green Mahanadi Mission’’ to protect and conserve river Mahanadi and ensure perennial flow of Mahanadi, Ib, Tel, Brahmani, Baitarani, Vansdhara , Rushikulya, their tributaries and distributaries.

Under the scheme a green belt will be created in one km width on both sides of the seven rivers.
